Upper Gastrointestinal, Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgeon

Dr Talbot completed Medical training and his Intern year in New Zealand before starting work at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney at the end of 1993. After completing his basic surgical training in 1996, he moved to St George Hospital in 1997 to commence the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons training program. Over the next four years he worked at St George, St Vincent’s, Liverpool, and Wollongong Hospitals until passing his final exams at the end of 2000.

In 2001-2002 he worked as the Lister Lecturer in Upper GI Surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Scotland. Upon finishing in Glasgow he spent 6 months observing other specialist Upper GI and Bariatric units in Munich, Los Angeles, Brisbane, Adelaide and Wellington, New Zealand., before starting work as a UNSW Senior Lecturer in Surgery at St George and Wollongong Hospitals in 2003. At the end of 2004 he was too busy to manage two large public hospital positions so he cut back his Wollongong Inpatient workload, while still continuing to see patients in his Illawarra clinic.

As well as his work at St George Hospital, Sutherland Hospital and St George Private Hospital he has been working at the Sydney Institute of Obesity Surgery since 2004 and is currently its surgical director, and was a founding member of the Eastern Obesity Clinic in Randwick in 2007.

Dr Talbot maintains an active interest in the more complex areas of Upper Gastrointestinal surgery Bariatric surgery and endoscopy, and has performed almost 2000 primary and re-do weight loss procedures including large numbers of laparoscopic gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy (since 2004). His other surgical interests include cancer surgery and reflux, and he has run an Oesophageal Physiology lab since 2007.

Dr Talbot is the Head of the Dept of Upper GI Surgery at St George hospital, and is a member of a number of local and international societies including the American Society of Obesity and Metabolic Surgery (ASMBS), the International Federation for Surgery for Obesity (IFSO), the Obesity Surgery Society of Australia and New Zealand (OSSANZ), The Australian and New Zealand Gastro-Oesophageal Surgical Society (ANZGOSA), The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). He runs several research projects per year and presents at local and international meetings on topics including Upper GI Surgery, Obesity, and Endoscopy.

Dr Talbot finds the time spent with his patients to be the most enjoyable part of his job. “Talking to patients, and trying to find the least intrusive surgical treatment for the problems they are trying to beat is a constantly challenging and rewarding job”, “No two patients are the same, and taking the time to offer each person as many choices and options as possible allows them to take charge of their treatment and gain a real sense that they have been able to help themselves”.
