At The Alfred he has overseen the establishment of a multidisciplinary bariatric surgical service that now

performs more than 300 bariatric procedures per year. This service is integrated into, and complements

the upper gastrointestinal services at the hospital.

Prof Nottle’s own practice reflects his Unit interest with particular emphasis in Gastric and Oesophageal

Cancer, Bariatric Surgery, hiatus hernia surgery, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and gastro-intestinal

endoscopy

He graduated from Monash University in 1970 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of

Surgeons in 1978. Following his Fellowship he spent almost 2 years working in England developing his

surgical skills, particularly in Upper GI surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy. On return from the UK,

he was appointed Visiting Surgeon to the Alfred Hospital and continued developing both these areas. In

early 1990, he was the first surgeon to perform a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy using the French

technique at The Alfred and supervised many workshops teaching laparoscopic cholecystectomy and

other laparoscopic procedures over the subsequent years.
